An Experimental Investigation of Online Investor Education for Youths in Malaysia: Testing The Effectiveness of Online Delivery Using a Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT)
About this paper
This study investigates the effectiveness of different types of financial education interventions for youth in Malaysia, specifically focusing on Millennials and Gen Z. Utilising a randomised controlled trial (RCT), the research evaluates the impact of financial literacy interventions on these demographics, in particular with regards to financial literacy and investment confidence. Results indicate a positive correlation between intervention and improved financial knowledge as well as confidence to invest.
Additionally, the study underscores the importance of repeated exposure to financial content for sustained knowledge thus emphasising the strategic value of microlearning— delivering short, continuous, and straightforward content. The study also highlights the need for information to be timely and relatable to the audience.
However, the study acknowledges challenges, including language barriers and the need for a more comprehensive understanding of real-world reactions. Despite these limitations, the researchers recommend future expansion of the study with a more rigorous approach to inform targeted financial education strategies for the youth in Malaysia.
